THC and CBD, signs of marijuana use, THC and CBD, signs of marijuana use, effects on the body, specifically the heart, effects on the body, specifically the heart, lungs, brain, and mental health combinations. lungs, brain, and mental health combinations. So things that marijuana may be like, laced with So things that marijuana may be like, laced with that we need to be aware of, concentrates in that we need to be aware of, concentrates in edibles, cannabis use disorder, which is considered a psychiatric edibles, cannabis use disorder, which is considered a psychiatric disorder, medical use, legalization information, which is kind of disorder, medical use, legalization information, which is kind of hot off the press, and just some general prevention hot off the press, and just some general prevention tips, since we always like to leave with some tips, since we always like to leave with some good information and things for parents to think about good information and things for parents to think about that they can do to help their kids. that they can do to help their kids. They get reports every year. They get reports every year. More than one in ten young adults reported using marijuana More than one in ten young adults reported using marijuana on a daily basis in 21, and more than two on a daily basis in 21, and more than two in five used it in the past year. in five used it in the past year. Rates of marijuana use nearly doubled over the Rates of marijuana use nearly doubled over the past ten years for this age group, and past ten years for this age group, and past year use jumped nearly 50%. past year use jumped nearly 50%. Now, we know that the pandemic was in there. Now, we know that the pandemic was in there. A lot of people were dealing with a lot A lot of people were dealing with a lot of other issues going on during the pandemic. of other issues going on during the pandemic. The pandemic really kind of exacerbated the addiction The pandemic really kind of exacerbated the addiction problem that we've already had in our country. problem that we've already had in our country. So it's not surprising to see these kind of increases. So it's not surprising to see these kind of increases. About 16% of young adults reported vaping About 16% of young adults reported vaping nicotine in the past month, and 12% nicotine in the past month, and 12% report vaping marijuana, infants, children, and teens. report vaping marijuana, infants, children, and teens. Why these are important, and this data is important Why these are important, and this data is important when we look at young adults, is that infants, when we look at young adults, is that infants, children, and teens who still have developing brains are children, and teens who still have developing brains are especially susceptible to the adverse effects of marijuana, and especially susceptible to the adverse effects of marijuana. And that's whether they're around somebody that's that's whether they're around somebody that's smoking it or smoking it or obviously they're using it. obviously, if they're using it. Marijuana is a mind altering Marijuana is a mind altering psychoactive drug produced by cannabis. psychoactive drug produced by cannabis. Sativa plant contains over 500 substances or Sativa plant contains over 500 substances or chemicals, and over 100 of those chemicals chemicals, and over 100 of those chemicals or compounds in marijuana are psychoactive compounds. or compounds in marijuana are psychoactive compounds. And that's what produces the psychoactive And that's what produces the psychoactive or high effect, particularly thc. or high effect, particularly thc. Marijuana has a psychedelic, Marijuana has a psychedelic hallucinogen and depressive effects. hallucinogen and depressive effects. It's not labeled as one specific It's not labeled as one specific drugs drug, but as a combination. drug, but as a combination. Because of the effects that it produces. Because of the effects that it produces. It can be smoked as a cigarette, which is commonly It can be smoked as a cigarette, which is commonly called a joint or a roach, or in a pipe, called a joint or a roach, or in a pipe, bong or a blunt, which is a hollowed out cigar. bong or a blunt, which is a hollowed out cigar. It can affect driving, and it is not safer to drive It can affect driving, and it is not safer to drive under the influence of marijuana than it is with alcohol. under the influence of marijuana than it is with alcohol. There is a myth out there that says There is a myth out there that says marijuana makes people calmer, so they drive better. marijuana makes people calmer, so they drive better. And that has not been proven out in research. And that has not been proven out in research. You can actually smoke marijuana in a vape and You can actually smoke marijuana in a vape, in a pipe if you didn't know that already. a pipe if you didn't know that already. And there's also pods now with And there's also pods now with the vapes that kids are accessing. the vapes that kids are accessing. But you can tell if it's a regular vaping But you can tell if it's a regular vaping pod or a marijuana pod, because at the bottom pod or a marijuana pod, because at the bottom of the marijuana pod, it says THC. of the marijuana pod, it says THC. So they're all, as far as So they're all, as far as I know, they're all labeled THC. I know, they're all labeled THC. That's how you know if your child That's how you know if your child is just vaping regular or marijuana. is just vaping regular or marijuana. But these are kind of different variations of vapes. I'm sure you've heard a bunch of common I'm sure you've heard a bunch of common ones, like Mary Jane, bud, blunts, dope. ones, like Mary Jane, bud, blunts, dope. What else is there? What else is there? Reefer smoke weed is, I think, the most common one. Reefer smoke weed is, I think, the most common one. Joint, herb, grass, some not common ones. That's what produces the high. That's what produces the high. When smoked, it rapidly passes from the lungs to When smoked, it rapidly passes from the lungs to the bloodstream and then carried throughout the body. the bloodstream and then carried throughout the body. If eaten THC, it's absorbed more slowly, so the If eaten THC, it's absorbed more slowly, so the effects are felt in maybe 30 to 60 minutes. effects are felt in maybe 30 to 60 minutes. CBD. CBD. This is something new that we've added This is something new that we've added since we're hearing so much about CBD. since we're hearing so much about CBD. It is one single compound found in It is one single compound found in and extracted from the cannabis plant. and extracted from the cannabis plant. While marijuana is a type of the plant that contains While marijuana is a type of the plant that contains many compounds, CBD and THC are some of those compounds. many compounds, CBD and THC are some of those compounds. I think it's. I think it's over 500 compounds are found in marijuana. Over 500 compounds are found in marijuana. The FDA has approved only one CBD The FDA has approved only one CBD product, which is a prescription drug product product, which is a prescription drug product to treat seizures associated with specific conditions. to treat seizures associated with specific conditions. That is to say then, that the FDA has That is to say then, that the FDA has not approved any other CBD over the counter product. not approved any other CBD over the counter product. It is currently illegal to market CBD by adding it It is currently illegal to market CBD by adding it to a food or labeling it as a dietary supplement. to a food or labeling it as a dietary supplement. CBD products can legally only contain CBD products can legally only contain up to 3% of THC. up to 0.3% of THC. There's no way to completely split THC out of CBD, but There's no way to completely split THC out of CBD, but THC in these very, very small doses can, when combined with THC in these very, very small doses can, when combined with CBD, can seem to be effective in some cases. FDA approved products include gummies, oil capsules, FDA approved products include gummies, oil capsules, and tinctures that you would tincture something and tinctures that you would tincture something you would drink, take orally. you would drink, take orally. Now, this was interesting when I researched this. Now, this was interesting when I researched this. There are six, only six evidence There are six, only six evidence based, proven health effects of CBD. based, proven health effects of CBD. And in research, these did not bear out all And in research, these did not bear out all of the time, so they may relieve pain. of the time, so they may relieve pain. Mostly in the research with multiple sclerosis and Mostly in the research with multiple sclerosis and arthritis patients, they found it was somewhat effective. arthritis patients, they found it was somewhat effective. There are neurotransmitters in our brain that'll sound There are neurotransmitters in our brain that'll sound a little familiar to you from previous presentations a little familiar to you from previous presentations that interact with the cannaboid, cannabinoid receptors in that interact with the cannaboid, cannabinoid receptors in our brain, or cannabis receptors in our brain. our brain, or cannabis receptors in our brain. The neurotransmitter interacts with that The neurotransmitter interacts with that receptor and eases pain. receptor and eases pain. CBD could reduce symptoms of mental health disorders. Particularly, they've had some studies that have Particularly, they've had some studies that have looked promising for anxiety and PTSD. looked promising for anxiety and PTSD. They may alleviate certain cancer related They may alleviate certain cancer related symptoms, pain, or possibly nausea. symptoms, pain, or possibly nausea. But their study results have been mixed. So that means that there were some positive results So that means that there were some positive results with the relaxing of people that are having seizures, with the relaxing of people that are having seizures, the seizing up, the spastic nature, the tightening. the seizing up, the spastic nature, the tightening. But there were still some adverse effects found But there were still some adverse effects found in those studies may benefit heart health, which in those studies may benefit heart health, which is interesting, possibly artery function and blood pressure is interesting, possibly artery function and blood pressure and other benefits are limited, and including relief and other benefits are limited, and including relief from people that have a certain specific brain from people that have a certain specific brain tumor, antipsychotic properties, people that are having psychotic tumor, antipsychotic properties, people that are having psychotic mental health challenges, and sleep benefits. mental health challenges, and sleep benefits. But again, it is not without its side effects. But again, it is not without its side effects can cause changes in appetite, weight, diarrhea, and fatigue. And that goes along with the purity of the product. And that goes along with the purity of the product. Many herbal products or herbal Many herbal products or herbal supplements will interfere with medication. supplements will interfere with medication. So again, if you're on an herbal supplement, Again, if you're on an herbal supplement, physicians need, your physician needs to know that, your physician needs to know that, because because that can also interact with medication. that can also interact with medication. Now, what we're seeing in some of the extracts or Now, what we're seeing in some of the extracts or the edibles that are out there, extracts, and we'll talk the edibles that are out there, extracts, and we'll talk about those in a bit, are used in vaping, dabbing, about those in a bit, are used in vaping, dabbing, and edibles can contain 50% or up, and we've even and edibles can contain 50% or up, and we've even seen some that have been sold that are up to seen some that have been sold that are up to 90% THC, which is staggering amount of THC. 90% THC, which is staggering amount of THC. And of course, we know that with And of course, we know that with higher THC levels mean a greater risk higher THC levels mean a greater risk for risky, risky behaviors and addiction. for risky, risky behaviors and addiction. So, in general, and you all have probably seen So, in general, and you all have probably seen this slide before, but when we talk about signs this slide before, but when we talk about signs of marijuana use, we're talking generally in signs of of marijuana use, we're talking generally in signs of most substance abuse, it can be easy to dismiss most substance abuse, it can be easy to dismiss changes as normal adolescent behavior. changes as normal adolescent behavior. We all know when our kids get to be We all know when our kids get to be about eleven or twelve, or they start doing things about eleven or twelve, or they start doing things that we just have never seen them do before, that we just have never seen them do before, or speak in ways we've never heard. or speak in ways we've never heard. So that can, of course, be So that can, of course, be part of normal adolescent development. part of normal adolescent development. But we also want to look for changes that seem But we also want to look for changes that seem to be occurring frequently in patterns, extremes over time, and to be occurring frequently in patterns, extremes over time, and that just seemed just very unusual or not normal for that just seemed just very unusual or not normal for your child, even given those other factors. your child, even given those other factors. Or you may see it ranging, especially Or you may see it ranging, especially as they're coming down off the high, as they're coming down off the high, to depression, sleeping and lethargy, disinhibition, relaxation. to depression, sleeping and lethargy, disinhibition, relaxation. Whereas we try to talk to our kids about certain Whereas we try to talk to our kids about certain substances are not healthy for them or not safe, they substances are not healthy for them or not safe, they may try to defend it a little bit, or, you may try to defend it a little bit, or, you know, oh, it's nothing wrong with it. know, oh, it's nothing wrong with it. I know people that do it and it's fine, or, I know people that do it and it's fine, or, you know, anything that seems to be that you know, anything that seems to be that their attitude their attitude is going toward this not being harmful. is going toward this not being harmful, impaired judgment, like Impaired judgment, like impaired driving, impaired driving, increases in risk taking behavior. increases in risk taking behavior. Sometimes you might even see like an exaggerated Sometimes you might even see like an exaggerated sense of creativity, or, you know, feeling like sense of creativity, or, you know, feeling like they're just smarter when they use marijuana. they're just smarter when they use marijuana. We used to call this amotivational syndrome, where We used to call this amotivational syndrome, where people specifically that use a lot of marijuana people specifically that use a lot of marijuana just are, you know, they're like lumps, they just are, you know, they're like lumps, they just don't feel like doing anything. just don't feel like doing anything. You know, they're just, they can't get motivated, they can't You know, they're just, they can't get motivated, they can't get moving, you know, they're just kind of, I guess get moving, you know, they're just kind of, I guess you could say lazy in a way, just very down, you could say lazy in a way, just very down, very kind of not really caring to do anything. very kind of not really caring to do anything. Because alcohol in the bloodstream can speed up. Because alcohol in the bloodstream can speed up. It's just peace and love, and, you know, It's just peace and love, and, you know, everybody's just very mellow when they smoke pot. everybody's just very mellow when they smoke pot. Panic attacks also occur. All are opposing the legalization of marijuana on a All are opposing the legalization of marijuana on a statewide as well as on a federal level. statewide as well as on a federal level. We want to help them establish We want to help them establish healthy behaviors, attitudes, and coping skills. healthy behaviors, attitudes, and coping skills. A teen initiating alcohol use, for instance, A teen initiating alcohol use, for instance, is four times more likely to develop is four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence as an adult. alcohol dependence as an adult. The younger you start using, the higher The younger you start using, the higher your risk is for developing dependence. your risk is for developing dependence. Know available resources, and reach out when necessary for a out when necessary for a reality check reality check or to make a plan of action. or to make a plan of action. So sometimes, you know, there are hotlines out there. So sometimes, you know, there are hotlines out there. The CDC has hotlines. The CDC has hotlines. Health departments have hotlines. Health departments have hotlines. There are many places you can call if you're in There are many places you can call if you're in crisis, but you can also call just to ask these crisis, but you can also call just to ask these questions as a concerned parent or a concerned adult. questions as a concerned parent or a concerned adult. This is what I'm observing. This is what I'm observing. I can't believe my child would really be using a I can't believe my child would really be using a drug, but I just want to know what drug, but I just kind of want to know what to do with this information or these observations. to do with this information or these observations. And there are many people out there that can help There are many people out there that can help you you with that or to make a plan of action. with that or to make a plan of action. What should I do now? What should I do now? How should I approach this? How should I approach this? And as always, network with other parents. And as always, network with other parents. Our kids can, you know, use one against the other. Our kids can, you know, use one against the other. Oh, I'm going over to this person's house when Oh, I'm going over to this person's house when really this person is going over to another person's really this person is going over to another person's house, and you're all getting together and having a house and you're all getting together and having a field party or something like that. field party or something like that. So, you know, it never hurts to communicate So, you know, it never hurts to communicate with parents, especially the parents of your kids with parents, especially the parents of your kids friends, and just kind of, you know, make friends, and just kind of, you know, make sure everybody's on the same page there. sure everybody's on the same page there. General prevention tips. General prevention tips. I always love to give these at the end because I always love to give these at the end because it is never too early to start thinking about prevention. it is never too early to start thinking about prevention. And we don't even have to And we don't even have to mention the word drugs or alcohol. mention the word drugs or alcohol. We can start by just doing some of these We can start by just doing some of these things, helping our kids develop the skills and the things, helping our kids develop the skills and the information, getting the information that they need. information, getting the information that they need. Those life skills are very important. Those life skills are very important. So spending time together and maximizing the time that we have So spending time together and maximizing the time that we have with our kids, if, you know, we all have busy lives, with our kids, if, you know, we all have busy lives, and if we seem like we spend more time with our and if we seem like we spend more time with our kids in the car, driving them to practice at home, there's kids in the car, driving them to practice at home, there's time there that we can at least talk. time there that we can at least talk. It doesn't have to be big, heavy It doesn't have to be big, heavy talk about, oh, my gosh, drugs. talk about, oh, my gosh, drugs. It can be, how are you doing? It can be, how are you doing? How are you dealing with that stress about How are you dealing with that stress about your exam coming up? your exam coming up, those kind of things? You know, those kind of things. We can maximize those little snippets of time We can maximize those little snippets of time that we might have with our kids, initiate that we might have with our kids, initiate the communication early, praise and encourage positive choices, the communication early, praise and encourage positive choices, really accentuate all the positive things that they're really accentuate all the positive things that they're doing in their lives that make you proud. doing in their lives. That make you proud. Express concern about their safety and Express concern about their safety and well being on a regular basis. well being on a regular basis. Express consistent messages regarding Express consistent messages regarding disapproval of substance use. disapproval of substance use. Be really clear about your expectations of nonuse and Be really clear about your expectations of nonuse and reminding them often, you know, remember, you know, you're reminding them often, you know, remember, you know, you're not to be drinking when you go to that not to be drinking when you go to that party or you're not to be smoking pot when party or you're not to be smoking pot when you're hanging out, you know, after school. you're hanging out, you know, after school. Establish alternatives and consequences and be Establish alternatives and consequences and be prepared to enforce the consequences. prepared to enforce the consequences. It's the hardest thing that we have to do It's the hardest thing that we have to do as parents, but it's crucial that we stick to as parents, but it's crucial that we stick to our word about, you know, we have a plan. our word about, you know, we have a plan. You know, we do not approve of this. We do not approve of this. When you stray from that, there When you stray from that, there are going to be consequences. are going to be consequences. Help them develop ways to resist Help them develop ways to resist and be comfortable saying no. and be comfortable saying no. Have some kind of an exit plan. Have some kind of an exit plan. So if they're going to a party and they're not So, you know, if they're going to a party and they're not really sure that they really want really sure that they really want to be there, or to be there, or maybe they get there and maybe they get there and they're feeling uncomfortable, there are they're feeling uncomfortable, there are situations they're not comfortable situations they're not comfortable with, you know, what's going to with, you know, what's going to be the way be the way for them to get out of it? for them to get out of it? Can they text you a word? Can they text you a word? Can they call you and say, mom, can you come get me? Can they call you and say, mom, can you come get me? I forgot I needed to do something tonight, or I'm I forgot I needed to do something tonight, or I'm not feeling well, or, you know, have some kind of not feeling well, or, you know, have some kind of a way that they can get out of that while a way that they can get out of that while kind of trying to save face around their friends, if kind of trying to save face around their friends, if you will, or give them, you know, ways to come you will, or give them, you know, ways to come up with a ready excuse for saying no. up with a ready excuse for saying no. Like, oh my gosh, my parents would kill me. Like, oh my gosh, my parents would kill me. Oh, my parents would freak out. My parents would freak out. I would be so in trouble if I would be so in trouble if my parents found out I was here. my parents found out I was here. So, you know, we can practice So, you know, we could practice that with them a little bit. that with them a little bit. Prevention research shows that eating meals together as Prevention research shows that eating meals together as often as possible can decrease youth and teen often as possible can decrease youth and teen substance use by up to 50%. substance use by up to 50%. Very important, again, to have that time with our kids Very important again, to have that time with our kids doesn't have to be real heavy, deep discussion time. doesn't have to be real heavy, deep discussion time. It can just be something as simple as spending It can just be something as simple as spending time together, enjoying time together, eating a meal together. time together, enjoying time together, eating a meal together. And research has shown this throughout And research has shown this throughout the years, that eating meals together the years, that eating meals together is one of those protective factors. is one of those protective factors. And youth do report, even though it's hard And youth do report, even though it's hard to believe that they look to their parents to believe that they look to their parents first for guidance on decision making and problem first for guidance on decision making and problem solving around alcohol and other drug use. solving around alcohol and other drug use. So they need us when they're young So they need us when they're young to really set the boundaries, give them to really set the boundaries, give them good guidance to really be their parents. good guidance to really be their parents. And ideally down the road when they're in their And ideally down the road when they're in their twenties and thirties, we can be more on a twenties and thirties, we can be more on a friendly basis as a friend or someone to hang friendly basis as a friend or someone to hang with, but they need us as parents. with, but they need us as parents.
